| Prakriti |
We are all born with unique “default” settings that make us who we are. These settings make us special and different from everyone else. In Ayurveda, this unique inborn setting is called Prakriti.
Prakriti means Nature, and it is your original, fundamental setting. It determines how your body and mind react instinctively to your surroundings. Many of the traits you admire about yourself stem from your Prakriti, and even the qualities you struggle with can be explained through this understanding.
Understanding your Prakriti helps you know yourself better. You begin to realize why you prefer certain foods or why you react emotionally in specific ways. It frees you from feelings of guilt and confusion towards your natural inclinations. And, most importantly, knowing your Prakriti helps you enact those lifestyle changes that support disease prevention and longer-life health
What Decides Your Prakriti?
Your Prakriti is decided at the moment of conception and does not change throughout life. The following factors influence your Prakriti
-
Physical condition of your parents -
Genetic composition of parents -
Behavior of parents at conception
-
Time and season of conception -
Dietary habits and lifestyle of the mother -
Mental state of the mother
Once your Prakriti is established, it remains constant throughout your life. It’s a permanent blueprint, unique to you, just like your fingerprints.
What Your Prakriti Determines About You
Your Prakriti influences various aspects of your life, including
-
Physical appearance -
Diseases you are prone to -
Impact of physical activities on your body -
The best remedies for you -
Your body’s response to different conditions
-
Dietary requirements -
Mental state -
Behavior -
Likes and dislikes -
Temperament
This is why Ayurveda emphasizes personalized treatments. Unlike general health advice, Ayurveda tailors its treatments according to your Prakriti.
