Virechana - Therapeutic Panchakarma Procedure for Pitta Elimination
Virechana is an Ayurvedic therapeutic process that is meant particularly for the removal of vitiated Pitta Dosha through induced purgation. Of all the five Panchakarma treatment modalities, it provides the maximum advantages as a curative procedure as well as a mode of preventive detoxification.
This type of energy present in the body is Pitta. It performs such functions as metabolism, digestion, and transformation. Whenever it gets agitated, hyperacidity, skin inflammations, liver disorders, and sometimes even jaundice or chronic digestive issues rise up. The process of purging from the body through removal of excess Pitta and help balance it back is called Virechana.
It mainly aims at Pitta dosha, though it tries to balance the other two doshas that are Vata and Kapha. All of the doshas contribute to sustaining one’s health.
Virechana in Balancing Dosha and Eliminating Mala
Virechana is a part of the Shodhana procedure in Ayurveda. It is mainly concerned with the removal of vitiated Pitta along with the respective malas. According to the classical Ayurvedic texts, Charaka Samhita, malas are those substances that have been formed inside the body due to a lack of proper digestion and also because of imbalanced doshas. These waste products are one of the principal causative factors for the creation of several diseases.
Virechana eliminates Pitta, and along with it, the malas associated with Pitta, which aids in detoxification and enhances body functions.
Virechana Karma: Seasonal and Therapeutic Benefits
Preventive Role – Virechana is very relevant during summer since Pitta augments naturally within the body during this time. Seasonal purification can dilute the intensification of Pitta thus guarding against the diseases due to excess Pitta which may include rashes and other skin problems, ulcers, and digestive upsets.

- Swedana (Sudation) - Medicated steam and oils are applied for mobilization of toxins, thereby preparing the body for purgation.
- Pitta Provocation - The patient takes Pitta-aggravating foods on the night before the major procedure so that elimination may be provoked.
- Pradhan Karma (Main Phase) - This is the phase of actual purgation. The patient is given a mild purgative, which is an herb like Triphala, or castor oil so that the bowels start moving by themselves.
Pashchat Karma or Post-Therapy Care
- Reparation - The patient is counselled to rest and keep a light diet, with easily digestible food stuffs to help the body recover.
- Diet - The patient is advised to diet according to the severity of the illness and amount of toxin in the body.
After Effects of Virechana
